New Windows

When it comes to replacement windows, not every window is right for every application. Energy efficiency is very important but so is matching the new window to the existing designs of the remaining ones. Is it possible to change the size of your window or the shape when replacing an older one? Yes, with some extra design work you can update the look of your home just using new windows. Older homes are made to look younger when larger windows replace smaller ones. Also your home can benefit from having a new focal window (bow, bay, palladium) in the front to distinguish it from neighboring homes.

Do It Yourself vs The Professional

Everywhere you look there are do-it-yourself books, TV shows and how-to information available via the internet. They make it look easy to do home projects.   Therefore, many people try to “do it themselves” before turning to a professional. Many people think it is more cost effective to do on their own instead of calling in a professional. While the homeowner may be able to complete the job on their own, very often the results are less than ideal and the cost in time and labor much higher than if they’d hired a professional.  Think about it this way: would you rather have a professional do your plastic surgery or would you rather try it on your own after reading the instructions on the internet?

Exterior Home Check Up

Surfaces on the exterior of your home need protection from the high temperatures that the summer season brings. Look at your wood siding and check for any peeling paint. Remove vines growing on the house, siding, brick or mortar. Excessive plant growth or areas not properly protected with paint can compromise the integrity of the siding. If you have metal railings, any missing paint could lead to rust. Your deck’s surface should be cleaned and sealed (and re-stained, if desired) regularly to prevent the wood from deteriorating. Likewise, check the wood surfaces on any of your home’s exterior wood trim, found around windows, doors, gutters, eaves, and posts. Paint or wrapping wood is like putting sunscreen on a human body that’s exposed to the sun. It protects and keeps your home’s exterior healthy.  Remember: Prevention is less costly than replacement. So now is the time to check the exterior of your home and take steps to get it ready for the summer heat!

Safety Tip

If your smoke alarms are more than 10 years old the National Fire Protection Association recommends they be replaced. Also new smoke alarms codes in Forsyth County are now in force.

Ways to save energy

Plant trees or shrubs to shade air conditioning units, but not block the airflow. A unit operating in the shade uses less electricity. Deciduous trees planted on the south and west sides will keep your house cool in the summer and allow the sunlight to warm the house during the winter.

Planning an Addition

Depending upon the position of your house on your lot, additions can go up, or, ordinarily out, to the front, back or sides of the house. Let us help you decide where to put your addition. As you can see from the above pictures, this addition allowed for more living space without consuming too much yard space.
